Sakhalin Zoo Botanic Park
An amazing place where you can meet representatives of the animal world gathered from different parts of the world. It can also be called an open–air Museum, but it is much more difficult to keep "exhibits" in such a Museum: they are alive - and each with its own characteristic features in behavior, feeding and maintenance.
This is the corner of wildlife in the only region of the Russian Federation, which is located on an island, which in its turn is located in extremely snowy and unfavorable climatic conditions. The zoo is one of the favorite places to visit for Yuzhno- Sakhalin residents and guests of the city. Two hundred species of different animals, birds, amphibians and insects are located on 8 hectares of land.
Sakhalin Zoo is participating in three programs for the conservation of rare and endangered animal species created by the EURASIAN REGIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS and the UNION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS OF RUSSIA:
- a project to create a viable population of the white-shouldered eagle in captivity and monitor the population of this species in nature;
- amur tiger conservation and breeding program;
- fish owl breeding and conservation program.
108 species of plants grow on the territory of the zoo–botanic park, of which three species are listed in the Red Book of Russia (ailanthus nut, pointed yew, thick-flowered or grave pine) and two species are listed in the Red Book of the Sakhalin region - Sargent cherry (Sakhalin) and aralia high.
In addition, on the territory you can see the Scheidecker apple tree "Weeping", petiolate oak, linden, Manchurian hazel, the largest bagulnik, common gooseberry, Sakhalin fir, caprifol honeysuckle, horse chestnut, etc.
There is constant work on improving the maintenance of animals. In 2021, the Sakhalin Zoo Botanic Park was visited by 233,050 islanders and guests of the region, it became a place where you can have a good rest with friends or family, learn a lot of new and interesting things about animal life and get real pleasure from communicating with nature.
